Knowing Your Why

"When your why is big enough you'll find your how."

Hello earthlings! Lol. So, I would like to use this opportunity to wish us all a happy new month. The month of June promises to be filled with so much joy, laughter, prosperity, fruitfulness and accomplishment of goals! Amen to that.

I know some of us have looked at the calendar recently and have had mini panic attacks thinking of the goals that we're yet to accomplish. It's the beginning of the middle of the year, and rightly so. But look at it this way, this is the beginning of the middle of the year. Your feet are almost in two places at once. You can either choose to move both feet back into the past 6 months and live in the past mistakes or lack of accomplishments and motivation. You can focus on why things did not go the way you wanted to or why you have not gotten the desired results from all the hard work you put in at the beginning of the year. OR you can look ahead and say "well, the past six months have not gone as planned, but that would not stop me from forging ahead and achieving my goals! I still have six months!"

It might be easier said than done, but I guess this will depend on whether you're a half-empty or half-full cup kinda person. So be encouraged. Just keep fighting and keep your head up high.

Jumping into the title of the blog today, I know that one of the most popular questions we hear asked today is "why do you do what you do?"

Think about it for a second. Okay, a second is too short. Think about it for a minute.

Why do you do what you do?

Ask yourself; why do I get out of bed every morning? Why do I bother going to work or school? Why do I work where I work? When I come home from my day's job, why do I watch TV or the things I watch?
Why do I speak to people the way I do? Why do I say the things I say? Why do I believe the things I do? More interestingly, why do I think the things I do or form the opinions I do?  Why do I have the convictions I do? Why do I go to church on Sunday? or why am I reading this blog right now?

Most of us will find that we think the way we do because our minds have been conditioned, perhaps by society or other external factors such as family and friends.
Very often, I hear this question asked but I think that it's pretty easy to lose the depth of its meaning in one's life. Because it's easy to get sucked into the auto-pilot-ism(if there's a word like that) of life and just move from one phase of life to the next or perform certain activities because that is what is expected of us (perhaps of a woman at 28 or a man at 35).

I came across this diagram by Simon Sinek (or something like it, because I replicated it), a British-American author, motivational speaker and marketing consultant who also wrote the book "Start With Why". He calls it the "Golden Circle" which principles he applied to the business world and business strategies.(if you're interested in watching his amazing TED talk, I've attached a link here).

In applying this intriguing circle to our individual lives and knowing your why, the principle of the Golden Circle goes like this: Everyone knows what they do, some people know how they do what they do and very few know why they do what they do.

What circle(s) do you belong? And just before you enthusiastically answer "all three!", be honest with yourself and have a long hard think today.

You have to know why you do what you do because that in its very self motivates you to go on especially when you don't want to continue. When things get tough and you find yourself in a very challenging muddle, it's your "why" that would pull you through and give you reason to continue. Your "why" is also tied to your purpose, cause and belief. When you know why you do the things you do, you won't find yourself on auto-pilot in life or do things because they are expected of you.

So you want to start a business. Why? (and i watched something where a business guru said you don't start a business because you want to make profit. Profit is a result of a business, but should not be the purpose of the business). In other words, if you do not identify the reason and purpose for starting the business especially if you're entering a market that does not exist in your immediate environment, then you want to have a reason and purpose that people can trust and invest in...something that people can believe in You. People would most likely invest in and believe in a purpose than in "oh I want to make alot of money from this"

This is just an example, but think about other areas in your life where you carry out the most activities or plans that you've set out to accomplish for the rest of the year. Why do you want to achieve them?

Why do you do what you do?

REMEMBER: "When you feel like quitting think about why you started."
